If you’ve been declined by your bank for a loan in Ontario, you already know the conversation feels rigged. You sit down with a banker. They look at a number — a three-digit credit score — and that number decides everything. You don’t get to explain that you’ve been at your job for four years, or that your rent gets paid on the first of the month, or that the late payment on your credit report was a single bill four years ago when your dad was sick. The number says no, so the bank says no.

This guide is the other side of that conversation. We’ll walk through what “bad credit” actually means in Canada, why traditional banks decline so aggressively in this category, what alternative lenders look at instead, and how to get approved for a loan you can realistically pay back.

What “bad credit” actually means in Canada

Credit scores in Canada are produced by two bureaus — Equifax and TransUnion — on a scale from roughly 300 to 900. Banks generally describe the categories like this:

  • Excellent: 760 and above
  • Very good: 725 to 759
  • Good: 660 to 724
  • Fair: 560 to 659
  • Poor (bad credit): below 560

“Bad credit” usually means a score below 600. At most banks, anything under about 660 puts you outside their personal-loan box entirely. According to the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada, somewhere between 15% and 25% of Canadian adults sit in the fair-to-poor band at any given time. You are not alone in this.

What pushes a score down? Three things, in order of weight: missed or late payments (around 35% of the score), how much of your available credit you’re using (around 30%), and the length and mix of your credit history (the remaining 35%). Most “bad credit” stories don’t involve fraud or carelessness. They involve a job change, a medical event, a divorce, a co-signed loan that went sideways, or a single late bill that compounded.

Why banks say no — and what they’re missing

Big-bank underwriting in Canada is built for scale and predictability. The bank wants to fund 10,000 loans this quarter and lose money on as few of them as possible. So they pick a score threshold, and below it, the answer is no — regardless of who you actually are.

The problem with that approach is that a credit score is a backward-looking summary. It tells the bank what happened in your financial life over the past seven years. It does not tell the bank what’s happening right now. It doesn’t see:

  • Your current income, including recent gig and self-employment deposits
  • Your real expense patterns
  • Whether your rent has been paid on time for the last 12 months
  • Whether your bank balance grows or shrinks each pay cycle
  • Whether the negative items on your bureau are recent or ancient

The information that actually predicts whether you’ll pay back a $1,000 loan today is in your bank account. Big banks don’t look at it — they look at the bureau and stop there.

What alternative lenders look at instead

Lenders like Better Than The Bank are built around a different question: what does your actual financial life look like right now? We answer it with open-banking data, not a credit bureau pull at the front of the conversation.

Here’s how it works. When you start an application, you securely connect your Canadian bank account through Flinks — the same open-banking platform used by major Canadian banks for their own customer onboarding. We see read-only cash-flow data: deposit patterns, recurring income, recurring bills, average balance, NSF history. From that we can answer the question banks can’t: is this borrower paying their bills today, regardless of what happened three years ago?

We don’t require:

  • A minimum credit score
  • A specific employer or job title
  • Traditional employment income — we work with gig workers, ODSP and EI recipients, the self-employed, and people with non-traditional deposits
  • A spotless credit history

We do require:

  • An active Canadian chequing account at a recognized bank or credit union
  • A consistent recent deposit pattern that supports the size of loan you’re requesting
  • Ontario or British Columbia residency
  • Age of majority

If we need to verify something specific later in the process — proof of address, a piece of ID, or supporting documentation — we’ll ask for it directly. We start with a bank connection rather than opening with a stack of upload requests.

What a BTTB bad-credit loan looks like

Better Than The Bank arranges installment loans for Ontario and BC residents from $300 up to $3,000, repayable in fixed installments over 90 to 180 days. Better Than The Bank is a licensed Canadian broker and underwriter — we don’t lend our own money. We connect approved borrowers to vetted licensed lending partners, and we handle the application, decision, and funding experience end to end.

The loan structure is designed to be repayable on a normal Canadian household budget. Fixed installments, no balloon payment, no prepayment penalty if you pay it off early. Funding goes through Zumrails by Interac e-Transfer — once you’re approved and you e-sign your loan agreement, the money typically lands in your bank account within 5 to 15 minutes.

The honest cost

Canadian regulators require us to show you the cost of borrowing before you sign anything, and we will. As a baseline so you can comparison-shop honestly:

  • Representative APR: 31.98%
  • Representative example: Borrow $300, repay $316 over 90 days.
  • No prepayment penalty. Pay off early and save the remaining interest.
  • Full cost-of-borrowing breakdown appears on your loan agreement before you sign.

That APR is dramatically lower than the effective APR on a rolled payday loan. A payday loan rolled every two weeks for six months effectively costs hundreds of percent annualized. An installment loan at 31.98%, repaid on a 90-to-180-day schedule, does not.

How to apply

Getting started takes about 60 seconds. You enter the amount you want to borrow, a few basic details, and connect your bank through Flinks. We come back to you with a pre-qualification decision within minutes. Once you’re fully approved and you e-sign your loan agreement, we send your funds by Interac e-Transfer right away.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the minimum credit score for a bad-credit loan?

There isn’t one. Better Than The Bank does not require a minimum credit score. Our underwriting is based on cash-flow data from your bank, not on a bureau pull at the front of the conversation. A credit bureau report is only pulled at the formal loan agreement stage, after you’ve decided to proceed.

Will applying hurt my credit?

The pre-qualification step does not involve a traditional credit bureau pull, so it does not affect your score. A bureau pull happens only if you decide to move forward to a formal loan agreement.

Can I get a loan in Ontario with a credit score under 500?

Yes. Borrowers with scores under 500 are explicitly part of who we work with. What matters more is the pattern of deposits and bill payments in your bank account over the last 90 days. If that pattern supports repayment of the amount you’re requesting, low credit alone is not a barrier.

What about consumer proposals, bankruptcy, or collections?

You can still apply. Many of our borrowers have a consumer proposal in progress, a discharged bankruptcy, or active collections on file. We underwrite on real cash flow, not on bureau history alone.

Do you work with gig workers, ODSP, EI, or self-employed borrowers?

Yes. Income from gig platforms (Uber, DoorDash, SkipTheDishes, Instacart), ODSP, EI, CCB, pension, self-employment, and other recurring deposits is all accepted. Banks often don’t underwrite these income types cleanly. We do.

Is Better Than The Bank a direct lender?

Better Than The Bank is a licensed Canadian broker and underwriter. We connect borrowers with vetted licensed lending partners and manage the full application, approval, and disbursement experience.
